Paul Scholes has hinted on what Manchester United must do to become successful again.
The Red devils ended the 2017/2018 season without a trophy; and despite finishing second behind Manchester City in the league, Mourinho’s team were a whooping 19 points behind their City rivals which is a snapshot of the gap between the two sides.
United were also knocked out of the Champions League in the knockout phase of the competition after loosing 2-1 at home to Sevilla.
However, legendary midfielder Scholes, insists United’s focus now should be more on winning the Premier league again.
The last time they won it was in 2013 when the former England star was playing his last season at Old Trafford.
Both Liverpool and Manchester City reached the last eight of the Champions League, with the Merseyside club loosing the finals to Real Madrid, but Scholes insists, his former club should prioritize winning the league before chasing continental glory.
“I think they need to worry about the league first – the league’s the most important thing”, Scholes said.
“They haven’t really been close for the last five seasons. They need to concentrate on that and then the next step is Champions League.
“They need to play better, there’s no doubt about that, and maybe they need some better players.
Talking about the Champions League, Scholes added;
“We’ll have to wait and see but it’s not a given because there are so many top teams in the competition already, you have to be a special team to get to semi-finals and finals.
“Liverpool and Madrid have shown that and United need to get to that level.”
Meanwhile, Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale is seemingly unhappy at the Bernabeu despite helping Zidane’s side to a historic Champions League triumph on Saturday.
The Wales international scored a brace from the bench as Los Blancos won the European trophy for a record third consecutive time.
Bale’s double means that he ended the season with 21 goals despite playing the majority of his 39 games from the bench.
In spite of the speculations surrounding the Welsh winger, Scholes speaking at an official UEFA Champions League Final viewing party at London’s Sky Garden, does not see his former club signing him.
He added; “Can I see it happening? No, not really.”
“The only reason he’d want to leave Real Madrid would be if they wanted him to go.
“Could he come to Man United then? I hope so. Every United fan would want him: great ability, great talent, scores great goals.
“If it’s possible then, yeah, great, I hope it happens. But I don’t see it happening.”
