Tottenham Hotspur told they’ve made a huge mistake over Manchester United target Toby Alderweireld, reports the Metro.
Ex-Spurs stars Graeme Souness and Jamie Redknapp both believe that Mauricio Pochettinho has mismanaged Toby Alderweireld’s situation at Tottenham as the 29-year old stalls on negotiating a new contract with the club.
The Belgium international, regarded as one of the best defenders in England, for the first time since October, returned to the Spurs starting line-up in their Premier League game against Brighton; a match that ended 1-1.
‘I know he had an injury earlier in the season – he’s been a bit-part player since then,’ Souness told Sky Sports.
‘I think it’s maybe as much to do with his contractual negotiations as much as anything else because I do like him. I think he’s the best one they’ve got in that position.
‘I prefer him to [Davinson] Sanchez who is a young man still learning the game. You’ve got the finished article in him at 29.
‘It’s a brave move when you think what’s at stake. I think just bite the bullet, accept he’s going to leave but make the best of him while he’s around the place.’
Redknapp added: ‘Or just keep him, give him what he wants.
‘Arguably you’d say he’s been the best in the Premier League in the last few years. He’s a top-level player.
‘It’s a shame the way it’s worked out. 100% [it’s his contract] – this is what happened to Kyle Walker last season.
‘It’s a Tottenham trait – they don’t want to pay big money to keep one of their best players.’
Meanwhile, after the Belgium defender was left out for the victory over Chelsea earlier in the month, Pochettino told Sky Sports he does not deserve to be there over his other, in-form centre-backs.
“I don’t care about the personal situations with the club,” Pochettino said. “If they show me they deserve to play, they are going to play. It is not about personal feelings or emotions. It is about providing the team with the best tools to win.
“I cannot consider if they have a one-year contract, six months or 10 years, Pochettinho added.
When (Moussa) Sissoko arrived and he was a record signing, if he was not the best, he did not play. When Dele Alli arrived with Sonny (Son Heung-Min) for the £22m we paid Bayer Leverkusen, who played? Dele Alli – the whole season.
“My decision is always about football. It is not personal and not because of a contract problem. I don’t care about that. Always my decision is about what is best for the team and the best for the club.”
