Peter Crouch has revealed that one of his former team-mates, said to be a 20-a-day man, used to spark up before and after each match.
Mirror sport reports that the player in question would even have a quick puff at half-time in the showers, says Crouch.
Stoke City striker Crouch, 36, played with Croatian international Robert Prosinecki at Portsmouth between 2001 and 2002.
Counting Real Madrid and Barcelona among his former clubs, he arrived at Pompey with tremendous pedigree – even if he was past his prime.
But he surprised his team-mates with his smoking habit.
Speaking to FourFourTwo magazine, Crouch said: “He’d smoke before the game, at half-time in the showers and after the game as well.
Red Malboros, too. The real heavy stuff.”
Crouch has fond memories of playing alongside the midfielder, describing him as a “real character”.
He said: “I think I scored about 19 goals that season and he put pretty much every single one on a plate for me. He didn’t speak much, but you knew he understood far more than he was letting on.
“You could speak to him one-on-one and he’d answer in perfect English, but as soon as you told him to track back, he’d reply: ‘I don’t understand.'”
